What is VoWiFi?
VoLTE or Voice-over-LTE is a service that is quite widely known & is offered by most telecom operators in India. For the unaware, VoLTE is a technology which carries calls over the 4G data network. So VoWiFi seems similar, Yes similarly the operators are now using the same technology to transmit calls over the Wi-Fi network. Because a Wi-Fi network is more stable and is non-dependant of the cellular networks which mean subscribers can make calls even when there is no cellular connectivity. Voice over WiFi or VoWiFi means the use of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs) to carry Voice over IP – also called VoIP traffic. The service can be used over private WLANs, home WiFi networks, and public WiFi hotspots. This service has been in use by WhatsApp, Messenger, Duo for voice calls in their app but does VoWiFi need any app to function, you will know about this while you read along.

Several network operators are providing VoLTE services but it is only helpful outdoors. But what about indoor connectivity. Many a time user complains about poor network coverage inside the houses or basements where signals are obstructed by thick walls and floors and companies are unable to resolve them. So VoWiFi is here and it is here to solve this. VoWiFi is a good solution for superior call quality for consumers residing at weak signal areas or houses having poor network coverage.
How to turn on VoWiFi and is it free?
Simply go to settings>sim card & mobile networks>Airtel (for example)>Turn on wifi calling. We recommend you to also turn on VoLTE calling simultaneously so that in cases of drop-in Wifi signals the call seamlessly switches to VoLTE for drop-free calls. Well, currently as per reports no charge will have to be incurred by consumers using this service.
Which Companies are offering VoWiFi? and Supported devices
As per reports, Airtel is the first to test and roll out this service. Airtel VoWiFi will not require any additional apps and can be easily turned on any smartphone by following the above-mentioned steps. As of now, Airtel VoWiFi includes support for the iPhone 6s, 6s plus, 7, 7plus, 8, 8 Plus, SE, X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 pro, the Xiaomi Redmi K20/K20 Pro, POCO F1, Samsung Galaxy J6, A10s, A30s, On6, M20, M30, M30s, S10, S10e, S10 plus, Note 10, Note 10 plus and in the OnePlus 6,6T,7,7T,7 Pro and 7T Pro. We also have users feedback that the Realme XT also supports Airtel Wifi Calling.
In which states Vowifi is available?
The service is currently only compatible with Airtel Xstream Fiber home broadband and the company plans to roll out support for all broadband services and WiFi hotspots in the near future. Currently, it is being rolled out in Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, as well as in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Airtel plan to extend the service all over the country. Reliance Jio, on the other hand, has also started testing and rolling out its wifi calling service for its Jio Fiber through Jio Call app.
