When the whole World has nearly stopped due to the outbreak of this pandemic, Oneplus isn’t stopping. The Company had previously stated that it will launch its next series of phones on the 14th of April and has stuck to its decision even though the whole world and it’s one of the biggest markets, India is still in lockdown and the lockdown has been further extended to 3rd of May. Yesterday, Oneplus 8 & 8 Pro launched at an online event and so it’s now time to see whether you should go for the new OnePlus 8 series or should you stick with the old 7 Series? Let’s find out then.
Oneplus 8 & 8 Pro specs:
Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro Design (Display & Dimensions):
The Oneplus 8 sports a 6.55inch Full HD+ Fluid AMOLED dual-sided curved display with a resolution of 1080×2400 and 402 PPI and an aspect ratio of 20:9. The display supports refresh rates up to 90Hz and 180Hz touch sampling rate. It also supports HDR 10+ and DCI P3 color gamut. Oneplus 8 Pro on the other hand sports a 6.78-inch QHD+ AMOLED curved screen with a resolution of 3168×1440,513ppi and an aspect ratio of 19.8:9. The most noticeable difference between the two is that the 8 Pro supports 120Hz refresh rate and 240 Hz touch sampling rate. The display also houses the In-display fingerprint scanner and there’s Corning Gorilla Glass protection( there’s no mention about which glass but we think it is 6 ) at the front and back with a matte frosted finish glass back. The display has also got some A+ rating from Display Mate. The Oneplus 8 Pro is IP68 rated which means it can withstand dust, dirt, and sand, and is resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes.
Coming to the dimensions the Oneplus 8 measures 160.2*72.9*8.0mm and weighs in at 180g. Oneplus 8 Pro measures 165.3mm*74.3mm*8.5mm and weighs in at 199g.
Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro Processor & Storage:
Both the 8 & 8 Pro house the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Processor with 5G support and Adreno 650 GPU. Coming to ram & storage Oneplus 8 will come with 8GB/12GB LPDDR4X ram and 128GB/256GB UFS 3.0 storage while the elder brother houses the same amount of ram but with LPDDR5 ram and same UFS 3.0 storage. We were expecting the higher variant to come with UFS 3.1 considering its 2020.
Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro Cameras:
Coming to the camera, we can find that Oneplus 8 Pro boasts a quad-camera setup with a 48MP (f/1.7) Sony IMX689 primary camera, 48MP (f/2.2) Sony IMX 586 ultra-wide-angle lens with a 120-degree field-of-view, an 8MP 3X telephoto camera which is capable of 3X hybrid zoom and 30X digital zoom, and a 5MP color filter camera. On the video front, the 8 Pro comes with OIS+EIS, 3 microphones with an audio zoom feature. The camera also includes dual-LED flash and laser autofocus below the fourth sensor.
On the other hand, Oneplus 8 boasts a 48MP(f/1.8) Sony IMX586 main camera, 16MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. This camera is also capable of OIS.
Talking about the selfie camera, the punch hole packs in a 16MP primary camera on both the models.
Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro Software & Connectivity:
Almost all Oneplus phones run on Oxygen OS and without any surprises, these phones do run the Oxygen OS on top of Android 10 out-of-the-box. Oneplus has done some major customizations on its OS and brings a revamped dark mode and dynamic wallpapers which change according to the weather. Oneplus 8 Pro comes with Wi-Fi 6, dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, Haptic vibration 2.0, Type-C port, NFC, Dual-band A-GPS, GLONASS, NavIC, GALILEO for improved location but there is no 3.5mm headphone jack which is not a surprise for us. The 8 series also supports Google cloud gaming platform, stadia, and Amazon Alexa.
Battery & Charging:
Oneplus 8 comes equipped with a 4300mAh battery pack and gets support for a 30W wired fast charger which will surely come within the box. While the elder sibling comes with a 4510mAh battery with the same 30W wired charger and a new 30W wireless warp charge. You also get support for reverse wireless charging on the 8 Pro which means you can charge your TWS earbuds, smartwatches, and even other phones by placing them on the rear of the device.
Price and Availability ( Release date):
Oneplus 8 starts at a price of $699 (53K INR approx) for the 8GB+128GB base variant. But, if you are on the look for the 12GB+256GB variant, then you have to spend $799 (60K INR approx). Oneplus 8 Pro starts at a price of $899 (68K INR approx) for the 8GB+128GB variant and $999 (75K INR approx) for the 12GB+256GB variant. The 8 Pro will be available in three colors namely Onyx Black, Glacial Green, and Ultramarine Blue while the 8 comes with Interstellar glow, Onyx Black and Glacial Green, Both of these devices will go on sale from 29th April in North America. The company did not reveal the India prices or availability details. We will keep you updated once we know more about the same.
Our Opinion on OnePlus 8 & 8 pro launched:
Oneplus is no longer a flagship killer anymore and with such prices, they are directly competing with high-end Samsung and iPhones. Well, we think the 8 series is pretty expensive and for that, we think that Oneplus will still sell the 7 series of phones. So we would recommend getting a 7 series which may become cheaper after it is launched in India or you may also consider getting a Realme X50 Pro which promises some amazing features at a much lower price. So choose wisely and let us know your pick in the comments below. Thank you for giving your valuable time in reading this.
