The outrage of hashtags like #BoycottChina, #BoycottChineseApps, #BoycottChineseProducts has been on fire on various social media platforms after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for Atma Nirbharta and Vocal for Local and Sonam Wangchu’s call to boycott Chinese goods and services. Today at The Techno Drift we will find out if it is really possible to boycott China completely and if Atma Nirbhar Bharat is possible or not. So let’s find out. Also We Will let you know 59 CHINA APPS THAT YOU NEED TO UNINSTALL RIGHT NOW?
How did all this start? Is Atma Nirbharta Possible?
While addressing the nation about lockdown 4.0, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced a campaign called the Vocal for Local with an aim to make India self-reliant which also implicitly directed Indians to boycott Chinese goods and services. And few days after that Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer, innovator, and education reformist from remote Ladakh started a similar campaign to boycott Chinese software in a week and hardware in a year because of the rising tensions between India and China border disputes. And then it went viral and today according to a survey more than half of the Chinese smartphone users are ready to switch to a non-Chinese brand if they find a good alternative.
Is the boycott of Chinese goods possible? 59 CHINA APPS that YOU NEED TO UNINSTALL RIGHT NOW?
Well, we will say both yes and no. Yes because India has lot of potentials to be discovered and if there are adequate conditions, policies, and infrastructure then we can seriously transform India into the next biggest manufacturing hub of the world. No, because we cannot completely boycott china. Due to globalization, the manufacturing unit is completely interlinked and countries need to be dependant on other countries in some or the other way.
Why is boycott china not possible completely? What will happen if we completely boycott now?
First, let’s discuss what will happen if we immediately boycott things from now. India is one of the largest importers of Chinese goods and services. India imports nearly seven times more than it exports and that causes a trade deficit with China which is the largest in the world. According to 2018-19, India exported $16.7bn of goods to China and imported $70.3bn of goods from China, which resulted in a trade deficit of $53.6bn. Chinese smartphone brands currently power over $8 bn of India’s smartphone market by 51% namely Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Lenovo, Realme. And as a result, if we boycott Chinese goods immediately now without thinking of the alternatives then that would hurt India’s economy more than China because it will directly have an impact on India’s GDP which is already low.
Also after the launch of the ‘Make in India’ campaign by Prime Minister Modi, many Chinese companies have installed their assembling and manufacturing units in India, which has employed hundreds of thousands of workers in India. (Quick Facts-Samsung has the world’s largest mobile factory in Noida, India)
If we immediately boycott Chinese products now then these companies may be forced to stop their production in India, which may leave hundreds of workers unemployed.
Now before answering the question as to why is it not possible to boycott completely, we first need to understand that we live in a world where the whole manufacturing sector and supply chain is inextricably interlinked across the whole world. Any single product be it a car or a smartphone may have been assembled in a single country but is not completely made from a single country. All the labels of Made in India or Made in China does not resemble that the product is fully made in India or China. It may have been manufactured with the help of Chinese laborers and land, has investment from a different country say the US, has an innovation from Japan and could end up having Made in India apps.
The processor chips by Qualcomm or Mediatek has also some elements made by Chinese as well as motherboards and several other components. So it is not possible completely to boycott Chinese goods. Every nation can’t be segregated and its goods boycotted. Such consumer boycott movements are hardly new. Previously it has been tried by many countries and the countries who boycotted other country’s products faced serious issues on their economy.
Is Atma Nirbharta possible?
Yes, AtmaNirbharta is definitely possible but in the long run, in fact, the only feasible way to boycott is to implement an import-substitution method and produce alternatives of all products that we import. But this is only possible in the long run. At the end of the day, Indian companies need to work harder before they can compete with Chinese products. The government also needs to step in by providing improved services and lowering the cost at which Indian companies are granted loans. The ease of doing business should be more simplified and transparent and only then we will see a spur in Indian companies. A phase-wise production of Indian goods, as well as the boycott of Chinese products, should be done.
What about Chinese parts inside a smartphone? What are some Non Chinese smartphones brands currently in India?
Yes there are Chinese parts inside every other smartphone, but right now we can shift to some Non Chinese smartphone brands such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Apple, Asus, HTC, Google, Panasonic, Nokia, Motorola (owned by lenovo). Atleast we can stay safe from the privacy point of view.
What is the government doing now? India Announces Rs.50,000 Crore Plan to Boost Electronics Manufacturing.
India’s Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad has announced three new electronics manufacturing guidelines. These guidelines are aimed at boosting local manufacturing and attracting foreign investments. The government says these three schemes will account for Rs. 50,000 crores or approximately $7 billion.
“The three new Schemes are expected to attract substantial investments, increase production of mobile phones and their parts/ components to around Rs.10,00,000 crore by 2025 and generate around 5 lakh direct and 15 lakh indirect jobs.”, states the official press release.
Through this scheme, the government aims to provide an incentive of 4 per cent to 6 per cent on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India for a period of five years subsequent to the base year. Through SPECS, India aims to provide up to 25 per cent incentive on capital expenditure for electronic components, semiconductor/display fabrication units. Initially, the government will choose five global and five Indian smartphone brands for this initiative. Speaking of this initiative.
The Government has also ordered all government and private telecom companies to ban use of Chinese equipments.
Does deleting Chinese services or apps really work?
Uninstalling Chinese apps surely will have an impact on the companies. Firstly their revenues will decrease as we would not be paying them for in-app purchases and they would also not be able to display ads to us. Deleting Chinese apps will surely protect users data as well as indirectly the country’s data. Every data you give it may be your age, your daily steps, your location everything is saved within the apps database and it can be given to the Chinese govt whenever asked and the developers cannot deny because of the Non Democratic govt. in China. Tik Tok for example accesses your location even without asking for permission.
The moment we give these apps permission to control our camera, microphone and files who knows someone might be accessing it. A very good example is if you discuss about going to Dubai in the holidays then the next time you open up your FB or Instagram you will find Dubai travel ads popping up (Happens mostly on android phones). These all crucial data can be very well used against us in the times of war. Today in this world data is the most expensive thing in the world. Whenever any product comes for free then you are the product. Big companies like Facebook and Google are giants because of the data we give to them.

Our Opinion on “59 CHINA APPS YOU NEED TO UNINSTALL RIGHT NOW?” that Indian Govt. has banned.
According to us Chinese products cannot be boycotted completely all of a sudden and needs a systematic approach. Moreover, the Indian government needs to work on the existing rules and regulations to ease the process of doing business in India as well as several Indian startups and well established MNC’s also need to come forward to heavily invest in this industry so that we get better alternatives of the Chinese products and only then we can boycott china to a very large extent. But we can definitely start by uninstalling all Chinese apps from day one and boycotting Chinese finished products first. Then we can boycott Chinese brands and switch to Non-Chinese smartphone brands. As rightly said by Sonam Wangchuk we cannot boycott everything in a day but we can definitely start doing so by boycotting software in a week and hardware in a year.
